Rabindranath Tagore won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. Between 1901 and 2015, Nobel Laureates numbered 112. But Kabiguru Rabindranath is perhaps unique in being again honured by the Swedish Academy. His Nobel medallion and over 50 personal memorablia of immense historical value were burgled from the Viswa Bharati museum in March, 2004. In December, 2005 in an amazing gesture, the Swedish Academy presented two Nobel medals – one made of gold as replacement and the other of bronze for public display at Shantiniketan Tagore Museum.
An intriguing report was published on News18.com, with New Delhi dateline ( February 2, 2008 ) stating that the Criminal Investigation Department of Bangladesh had informed that a ‘man named Shimbu, was arrested ‘for stealing the medal from the museum four years ago.’ Cid B also ‘said among other articles stolen were costly jewels belonging to Tagore’s wife’. The News18 report also added that ‘ the West Bengal government had handed over the case to the CBI, which however abandoned the search after two years.’
It is not known whether arrest of Shimbu and so forth were reported at the time by any other news papers/agencies. It is also not clear what happened to this arrested accused and more importantly, to the stolen medallion and other items. No explanation or reference has come from the concerned authorities over all these years.
It is indeed heartening to know from the above Muktokatha report that this case is again under spotlight and all are hopeful that this time around a thorough investigation and retrieval of the priceless Medallion and other articles would be accomplished.

Hope Muktokatha will keep its readers duly informed.
